3D printer blocking laws

New York, California and Washington have passed or proposed laws that make 3D printers refuse to print guns and gun parts. Other laws cover sharing digital gun files.

What does New York's S9005-C require?

The governor signed S9005-C on 27 May 2026. Part C bans selling or delivering a 3D printer in New York without blocking technology, and the buyer and seller must meet in person. The rule starts one year after the state's Division of Criminal Justice Services sets standards.

What does California's AB 2047 require?

AB 2047 bans selling a 3D printer in California without "hardware, firmware, or other integrated technological measures" that block gun files. The Legislature passed it on 31 August 2026 and sent it to the governor on 14 September (status). Unless the governor vetoes it by 30 September, it becomes law (California Constitution, art. IV, sec. 10).

The rule starts one year after the Department of Justice publishes guidance, which waits on an ASTM standard. If no standard exists by 1 July 2029, the department no longer has to act.

What does Washington's HB 2321 propose?

HB 2321 would make printers sold in Washington block gun files in one of three ways: a check in the printer's firmware, a single approved slicer, or a handshake with approved slicers. It went to committee on 12 January 2026 and has seen no action since (status).

preslice is not a slicer. It edits the .3mf and makes no G-code.
